Chinese Herbs
Chinese Herbs are another branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine that are particularly useful when dealing with internal disorders ranging from digestive issues to gynecology. In fact, in China, herbs are used more often than acupuncture since they are said to have a stronger, faster and more lasting effect. The best method for many patients is a combination of acupuncture and herbs. The particular needs of each patient will be fully discussed at the initial interview and the use of acupuncture, herbs or a combo will be decided between the practiitioner and the patient.
Do I have to cook my own herbs?
Raw herbs are the most potent form, but there are other forms that are also very beneficial. For example, herbs can be given in a tincture (alcohol based liquid in which herbs are steeped over at least a 6 -8 week period), in pill form or in powder form (here, the patient simply adds hot water and drinks).
How long do I have to take my herbs?
This depends on the problem. When dealing with gynecology issues, a minimum of three months is required. For all other problems, herbs will be given on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and continuation of the herbs will depend on the patient’s degree of improvement. Herbs will generally be continued until 1 or 2 weeks after symptoms related to the major complaint have subsided.
How do I know that my herbs are safe?
Thankfully, over the past few years, the FDA has gotten tough on the regulation of Chinese herbs in the States. Caitlin only orders herbs from companies that check each herb and formula individually. These companies are US based and use US standards for processing and cleanliness. Raw herbs may be ordered directly from Taiwan, through a direct contact that supervises growth and harvesting of the herbs.
